Handy Hardware Joins Distribution America

The Houston, Texas-based Handy Hardware Wholesale has joined the Charlotte, N.C.-based Distribution America, the industry’s leading marketing and merchandising group comprised of the country’s premier wholesalers serving the home improvement industry.
With a customer base of more than 1,150, Handy Hardware Wholesale services independent hardware stores, home centers and lumberyards in a 10-state region. The 45-year-old company reported total revenue of more that $ 225 million last year.
With annual sales of more than $ 1.2 billion, Distribution America’s members represent the nation’s largest network of independent hardware, hardlines and paint sundries wholesale distributors serving 20,000 retail customers in all 50 states and exporting to 20 countries. Adding Handy Hardware as a member increases Distribution America’s volume by 20 percent, according to Dave Christmas, Distribution America’s president.
Christmas expressed enthusiasm about welcoming Handy Hardware into the Distribution America organization. “Handy Hardware is one of the largest, most well respected distributors in our industry, and they truly fit with our organization,” Christmas said.
Mickey Schulte, vice president of marketing for Handy Hardware, said the past year has been the wholesaler’s most successful year to date, with sales and earnings at an all-time high. “Coming off a record year, we wanted to keep the ball rolling,” Schulte said, adding that membership in the Distribution America organization made good business sense for his company. “Distribution America offers purchasing power and outstanding efficiencies for us as a company from a buying standpoint. Plus, their retail marketing programs and tools for dealers are advantageous to our customer base. We feel strongly about Distribution America being able to help us continue to grow as a company.”
Schulte said the membership alliance offers Handy Hardware increased internal efficiencies without additional overhead. “Membership in Distribution America will speed up the growth mode we are already in,” Schulte added. “Our management team is really excited about the future, with a nice growth mode in store for the next two years. Distribution America will be a part of that.”
Distribution America’s distributor board of directors, comprised of Member Owners, voted to welcome Handy Hardware as a new Distribution America distributor, and Handy Hardware’s board of directors, comprised of retailers, voted to join Distribution America.
Additionally, Tina Kirbie, who was named president of Handy Hardware in May of 2006, will be eligible to join the Distribution America board of directors. Handy Hardware will have full access to all of Distribution America’s buying programs along with central payables, customer circulars and retail profitability programs. Handy Hardware executives will also be welcomed to participate in Distribution America’s member committees, including sales & marketing, merchandising, finance and operations.
“Our board is very excited about welcoming Handy Hardware to our organization, beginning with our Executive Planning Conference in Carlsbad, California, November 12-14,” Christmas said. “Handy enhances our value to the vendor community, by broadening our retailer base and increasing our purchases giving us greater leverage to promote products through retailers.” Starting in 2007, Handy Hardware will be part of Distribution America’s central payables system, a more efficient process to channel payments from the DA distributor network to its vendors. Earlier this year, Distribution America restructured the organization for enhanced efficiencies and relocated the company’s corporate headquarters from Chicago to Charlotte.
